Shepton Mallet Drifters Model Boat Club

The 'Beast from the East' gave Collett Park Lake a good covering of snow and ice preventing the sailin of the first Sunday in March

Greetings All!
Welcome to the Shepton Mallet Drifters MBC web site. This site is designed to be the 'front office' of the club, to give all the information required for potential new members to find out about the club. We also have a Facebook group which is limited to paid up members only giving communication within the club eg. giving details of model builds etc.

The club was originally formed in 1993 when a small number of model boaters sailed once in a school swimming pool during a fete. From there the few local modellers sailed on a lake at Charlton Brewery at that time we were adamant we would NOT form an official club just meet and sail informally hence the name of Shepton Mallet Drifters as we spent more time drifting and talking rather than sailing! As word got around and time went on we had more modellers joining us and it was suggested we explore the possibility of using Collett Park Lake which is much shallower and easy for rescues. After discussions with the Shepton Mallet Town Council they agreed that we could use the lake BUT we would need Third Party Public Liability Insurance. they would allow limited vehicular access to the lake side once a month on the First Sunday from 10:00 -12:00hrs depending on weather conditions eg. if the ground was too wet during the winter we could not drive in. This was when we broke our first rule of NOT becoming an official club as we would require finances to pay for the insurance and to get a bank account you need a constitution etc. etc.

We have a club meeting at the Thatched Cottage Shepton Mallet every other month (see CLUB EVENTS page for dates) and attend many events around the country during the year. Our membership is around 60 with members from different parts of the UK including the Isle of Wight and London. We also have a newsletter twice a year.
